CAPTURE FISHERIES SUB-PROGRAM

As stipulated under Section 24 of the Fisheries Code, BFAR together with its Regional Fisheries
Offices is mandated to provide support to municipal fisherfolk for additional/ supplemental
livelihood. In line with this, BFAR MIMAROPA continuously conducts trainings for fisherfolk in
fishing gear design, construction and operation. Upon the completion of the training program, the
constructed fishing gears will then be distributed to the respective participants in support for their
livelihood. The fishing gears are composed of gill nets, hook and lines, fish aggregating devices
(FAD) or payao, motorized banca, tuna handlines, crab lift nets and crab trays.

AQUACULTURE SUB-PROGRAM

FISHERIES PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION
• Broodstock Development and Maintenance
BFAR MIMAROPA continued to maintain 6,720 quality tilapia, 200 milkfish and 225 finfish
broodstock in response to the pressing need for a steady supply of good quality fry and fingerlings
to meet the production demands of fish farmers as well as to increase fish production and
restoration of lakes and rivers.
• Fingerlings/Seed Stocks Production and Distribution
Tilapia, milkfish and other high value species (grouper, seabass, red snapper) hatcheries are
maintained. These hatcheries are being run by Inland Sea Ranching Station (ISRS) and
Brackishwater Fisheries Research Station (BFRS), the region’s operational Technology Stations.
Also, seaweed seedlings and farm implements are distributed and one (1) mariculture park was
maintained.

POST-HARVEST SUB-PROGRAM
• Establishment of Fishery On-Farm Equipment and Post-Harvest Facilities
In support to the distribution of seaweed seedlings, the Post-Harvest Section under the Fisheries
Production and Support Services Division thru the Provincial Fishery Offices established village type 

solar seaweed dryers to beneficiaries preventing contamination of organic materials like sand and dry

woods after harvest of seaweed seedlings. These dryers improve the quality of dried
seaweed increasing the price of the by-product.

MARKET DEVELOPMENT SUB-PROGRAM
BFAR recognizes the need to promote awareness on fisheries products and to develop the
domestic and international marketing networks to help gain market access. BFAR’s marketing
programs and services are designed to enhance the value and competitiveness of the fisheries
products through identification, development and promotion of market opportunities.
• Marketing Assistance
Conduct of daily fishery product price trend monitoring report (Market Monitored: Wet Markets at Puerto
Princesa City, Palawan, Odiongan, Romblon, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro
and Boac, Marinduque. Markets were monitored for the year to ensure the current price of basic fish
and fishery products are fair and correct. Market matching were organized to allow buyers and
sellers of fish and fishery products to meet, to trade and to develop marketing networks.
• Participation to Agri-Aqua Fairs and Exhibits
To showcase their fishery product for domestic & export market, the Fisheries Postharvest and
Marketing Unit are participating in different Agri-aqua fair/exhibits. These trade fairs and exhibits are as
follows: (a) TienDA Farmers and Fisherfolk Outlet, (b) Palawan Seaweed Summit, (c) Manila Food and
Beverages Expo (d) Agriculture and Fisheries Technology Forum and Product Exhibition, and (e)
Aqualink/Agrilink/Foodlink.
